Blessed be the name of the Lord

Last night at Community Group my friend Courtney told us about one of the speakers at this last weekend’s women’s retreat.  Apparently several years ago she gave birth to a stillborn little baby boy and in the moments that she held him she was able to eek out, if only in a whisper, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

That pretty much brought me to tears.

Today I was reading the Desiring God blog and this same phrase came up, so I looked up the context:

“‘And he [Job] said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return.  The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’  In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” (Job 1:21-22)

It takes great faith and freedom to love your life and the people in it deeply, while not holding on so tight that you venture into idolatrous territory.

I don’t imagine this can come without some suffering.  I also don’t imagine it can come without the presence of God.
